UAW organizers in contract clash with union

Staffers say their claims for better pay, job security are being shunted aside

Amid a changing of the guard in the top leadership of the United Auto Workers last spring, several dozen staff organizers formed an independent staff union hoping to secure a collective bargaining agreement. They were seeking what they so often try to win for so many others: job security, raises and transparency. 

About 40 staff organizers in UAW Region 9A — which encompasses New York City, Long Island and New England — make up the UAW Staff United union and the staffers, used to guiding workers through the unionization process, have themselves been in negotiations with the UAW since September.
