A Teachable Moment Lost

The increasing aversion to exposing students to the complexities of the real world because doing so might cause them an uncomfortable moment created another controversy, ensuring that battle lines would be drawn instead of opening up minds, in the Pelham School District's handling of the display of the thin blue line flag on clothing worn by both students and staff.

Last month the district banned such clothing on school grounds, with its Superintendent, Cheryl Champ explaining that the flag supporting police "has increasingly been perceived by students to be threatening in nature, causing them to feel unsafe within our schools."
