Advantage retirees

Posted

To the editor:

As a retired city employee with serious health concerns, I was pleased to learn that the courts have blocked the city from forcing retirees into an inferior managed-care medical plan. This decision is the latest in a series of court rulings against the mayor's plan.

Nevertheless, Mayor Adams stubbornly refuses to accept the court's ruling and to recognize the concerns of retirees. The city has appealed the court decision and continues to spread lies and misinformation on behalf of his misguided plan. The administration continues to falsely argue that the plan is as good or better than the health-care benefits retirees now receive.

Really? The plan limits access to care, subjects needed services to prior approval, and institutes co-pays for all services currently provided without co-payments. How is this better than our current Medicare and Medicare supplemental coverage? If the proposed plan is so good, why haven't the mayor, his senior negotiators and the leaders of the Municipal Labor Committee who endorsed the plan voluntarily enrolled in the program in a symbolic show of support?

After two years of setbacks, it is time for the mayor to graciously accept defeat and move on. He should cease his obstinate and mean-spirited quest to deprive retirees of the health care coverage they have earned, have been promised and have received for 60 years.
