To the Editor: Richard Steier's column (Nov. 20 issue) was headlined, "Screams of the Extreme Can't Pierce Realities." Extreme can be described as radical, intemperate, excessive, flagrant, outrageous, unreasonable, irrational, fanatical, desperate, drastic, exaggerated, monstrous, foolish and absurd. All are unpleasant reminders of Trump, his administration and the Republican Party. It's a false equivalency, however, to suggest that extreme also applies to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
Contrary to the attacks by the Republican Party and the Democratic Party establishment, there is nothing wrong with being a Democratic Socialist, which according to polls, is true of many young Americans. Socialism has had different versions over the past two centuries. The version supported by Bernie Sanders, AOC and other members of the House Progressive Caucus resembles social democracy practiced in Western nations. It means that government has a critical responsibility to curb the excesses of capitalism.
