Fire Museum documents the FDNY academy’s long history

The FDNY’s fire academy has changed a lot since the days when recruits would train in the backyard of a Midtown firehouse wearing no other gear than a wool tank top reading “probationary firefighter” on the front. 

Before that, during the 19th century, some recruits would simply be sent to firehouses for a one-month probationary period where they would train and learn on the fly from their more experienced colleagues.
