Bound for infamy

To the editor:

Can you think of anyone who would have despised Donald Trump more than the spokesman for the little guy and gal, Woody Guthrie? I submit this as an updated version of Woody’s classic to reflect the times.

This land is my land, this land is my land

From the West Coast commies to the New York woke-land

From the oil refineries to the Mar-A-Lago

This land was especially made for me

As I went golfing on my own golf course

I saw a migrant and we had to use force

He tried to escape and run away

Now he’s long gone from the USA

I have high walls around my castles

Well guarded by my military vassals

And all around me a voice was sounding

You’re the one God chose to lead his flock

The sun was shining but I was cranky

Musk was bugging me with his hanky-panky

I may not have a single real friend on earth

But this land was made just for me

I passed my big bad beautiful bill

With the help of all my congressional shills

I screwed Americans both left and right

And they never saw it coming — out of sight!

    A Patriot’s Song

    Beyond hope and fear.

In the great halls of Trump Tower.

    Plays a symphony of success.

Each symphony tells a heartfelt story.

Every musical note of hope and glory.

    Crescendoing verses of freedom ring.

As the people decry Biden, the king.

Trump supporters sing, Hail to the Chief.

When I was a child, there was a re-write of that Woody Guthrie song. I don't know which child came up with it, but it's certainly one that I can imagine the overgrown child in the White House singing: This land is my land/and only my land/If you don't get off/I'll shoot your head off/I got a shotgun/and you don't got one/This land was made for only me.

I can imagine President Trump, in the White House, reciting a poem about shining stars with pure, majestic voices.

Oh, raise your heads and voice.

    Give us manners and virtue.

    For we are shining stars.

    Our voices filled with glee.

Pure as heaven, majestic and free.

Quad Zero, I can also imagine Trump reciting that same poem in the Oval Office- when the cameras are rolling.

Once the cameras leave, I can also envision him laughing uncontrollably at the thought that anyone took him seriously.

    Patriot’s Dream

    Arlo Guthrie

    1976

Arlo Guthrie’s song “Patriot’s Dream” adds another dimension to the debate..

    Patriot’s Dream [

    Verse 1

Living now, here, but for fortune

    Placed by fate’s mysterious schemes

Who’d believe that we’re the ones asked to

Try to rekindle the patriot’s dreams

    Verse 2

Arise, sweet destiny, time runs short

All of your patience has heard their retort

Hear us now, for alone we can’t seem

To try to rekindle the patriot’s dreams

    Verse 3

Can you hear the words being whispered

    All along the American stream

Tyrants freed, the just are imprisoned

Try to rekindle the patriot’s dreams

    Verse 4

Ah, but perhaps too much is being asked of too few

You and your children have nothing to do

Hear us now, for alone we can’t seem

To try to rekindle the patriot’s dreams.
