Tiffany Cabán, a 31-year-old public defender and public-interest lawyer in her first run for elected office, stunned the city’s—and potentially the nation’s—Democratic establishment by outpolling Queens Borough President Melinda Katz by just over 1 percent Tuesday, likely capturing the party’s nomination for District Attorney in that borough.
Should she prevail—roughly 3,400 absentee ballots must still be tallied—Ms. Cabán would be a prohibitive favorite in November’s general election, portending a significant sea change in how criminal justice is administered in that borough.
