Private carters earned more than $16 million from hauling waste produced by businesses in the first six months of the city's commercial waste zone collection program, the Department of Sanitation outlined in a report this week.
The program, created by a 2019 law that overhauled how commercial waste was picked up, assigned private carters to pick up refuse produced by businesses in Central Queens during a transition period starting last fall. It ramped up to full implementation there in January.
