To the editor:
President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to charge and arrest many of his political enemies, most of whom are government officials, especially prosecutors who have charged Trump with crimes. What the president-elect is doing is to use the judicial system, with his sycophants in prosecutorial positions, to get revenge for the legitimate prosecutions against him.
Since a federal pardon can be issued prior to the start of a legal case or inquiry, prior to any indictments being issued for unspecified offenses, why doesn’t President Joe Biden preemptively pardon all those, maybe hundreds, who may be targets of Trump’s revenge?
This strategy has been suggested by some members of Congress, and this aggressive and utterly unprecedented action is just what Democrats need to show Trump they can play loose with executive power — as he has promised to do. Democrats have to show they can play the dirty power game as well or better than Trump can.
It makes perfect sense to prevent Trump from having the power to go on his revenge tour of our judicial system, and President Joe Biden can do it now using his pardon power. Pardoning up to 500 potential Trump targets would solve a big problem and put the judicial chokehold on Trump’s and his hitmen’s revenge games.
