City Council staff call out their bosses’ hypocrisy on worker rights

Employees' union has been negotiating a first contract for more than a year

Several dozen unionized City Council staffers rallied outside of City Hall on Wednesday to highlight the slow pace of contract negotiations with Council management. The staffers, members of the Association of Legislative Employees, started negotiating with their bosses in May 2022, and union leadership says that the Council’s negotiators haven’t budged enough on crucial points such as wages, overtime protections and job security.  

The union is seeking a $75,000 wage floor, stronger job security protections, hybrid flexibility and fair overtime compensation.
