The city will hire 135 new school safety agents weeks after a 250-person class was scrapped, with the announcement coming just days following violent incidents at several public schools.
The new class began their 17-week academy training Friday, City Hall confirmed. Although the Adams administration has implemented a hiring freeze in response to the costs of the migrant crisis, school safety agents were exempted because positions that support public safety have been spared from the freeze. Additionally, dozens of school safety agents are set to graduate from the academy today.
