That there are more than 22,000 unfilled positions within the municipal workforce has raised widespread concerns about the extent to which critical city services are being impacted. But the high vacancy rate within city agencies is also contributing to the high unemployment rate of Black New Yorkers, according to a recent report.
Although the number of jobs in the private sector have nearly returned to their pre-pandemic levels, public-sector employment is down by 25,000 jobs, or 4 percent, according to an economic update focused on the city's recovery of jobs since Covid published last week by the Center for New York City Affairs.
