Council likely to override mayor’s veto of street-vendor reform bill

Mayor Eric Adams has vetoed a City Council bill aimed at decriminalizing certain street vending violations — a move that drew sharp criticism from vendor advocates and elected officials who say the measure is critical to protecting immigrant workers.

The bill, passed in late June, would make vendors who run afoul of city regulations liable to fines of up to $1,000, depending on the infraction, rather than both jail time and fines. One of four bills whose sponsors are calling the Street Vendor Reform package, it passed with 40 votes in favor and eight opposed, a margin well above the 34 members of the 51-person body needed to override the mayor’s veto.
