Governor Cuomo, who has called for a statewide minimum wage of $15 per hour for all workers, last week declared that he will issue an executive order phasing in that wage for state employees.
The state’s minimum wage is now $8.75. Mr. Cuomo said he will use his power through the Division of Budget to implement the boost in stages through 2018 in New York City and 2021 in the rest of the state. He is the first Governor in the country to take such an action, and he said he hoped others would follow suit, although it was not clear how many had unilateral authority on the wages of their employees.
