To the Editor: The Democratic-controlled State Assembly is a key accomplice in helping Andrew Cuomo remain Governor. It is more than happy to grant him what he needs most: time. Speaker Carl Heastie, an ally of Cuomo who has been critical of his accusers, refuses to allow an impeachment vote. A majority of the Assembly, both Democrats and Republicans, are prepared to impeach the Governor and send articles of impeachment to the State Senate for a trial.
The 21 female Assembly Members who earlier released a letter in opposition to impeachment claimed it would be an insult to Letitia James, the first Black Attorney General, to take such a step before she completed her investigation. Ms. James, however, said that her investigation is separate from whatever the Legislature does, and would continue even if the Governor was forced to leave office.
