To the editor:

The message that many in Congress need to hear is this: Once you sell your soul, you can’t buy it back. All those who still follow the Trump lies, especially the “stolen election,” will probably never respect the truth, will never respect justice, and will never have respect for our Constitution. Their Machiavellian “religion” is that the end justifies the means — any means regardless of who gets hurt, regardless of who loses his or her life.

I don’t think it’s unfair or hyperbolic to say that after their support for the January 6 insurrection, some of our political leaders, especially the whites supremacists, are not so different from the leaders and soldiers of the drug cartels. There will be no reformation and no redemption for them. The signed contract with the devil is irreversible.

Hopefully, we can avoid a bloody civil war and keep the fighting on the political battlefields.  However, as the continued support for the January 6 insurrectionists by many Republican members of Congress makes clear, our civil war to protect our Constitution, our system of justice, and our support and protection of the poor and powerless could go off and escalate in any direction. Democracy comes with no guarantees.
