Exploding lithium-ion batteries are top cause of fire deaths this year

Exploding lithium-ion batteries became the leading cause of fire deaths in the city so far this year following a blaze in a Washington Heights apartment building earlier this month that killed four New Yorkers, bringing the death toll attributable to the batteries to nine, the FDNY said.  

And fatalities from fires caused by lithium-ion batteries through this week eclipse those of all of 2022, when 220 fires caused by lithium-ion batteries killed six people and injured 147.
