To the Editor: Stewart B. Epstein (Feb. 19 letter) is right to criticize opposition to the $1.9-trillion Pandemic Relief proposal. But he fails to point out that Republicans who oppose this and other worthy spending on the grounds that it will increase the deficit had no such concerns when voting for bills that would help the rich.
They did not oppose the Trump tax cuts. Also, while China is spending $178.6 billion on defense and Russia $41.6 billion, Congresspeople from both parties overwhelmingly approved a $740-billion defense budget. This is a prime example of corporate welfare.
