Federal firefighters in line for added protections

Legislation addresses work-related perils

Long-sought legislation by federal firefighters and their advocates that would provide added access to benefits following injuries or illness appears headed for Congressional passage.

The Federal Firefighters Fairness Act, which handily passed the House last week, would provide financial aid, medical benefits and other assistance to help firefighters, paramedics, emergency medical technicians and others who develop heart or lung disease or certain cancers after five years on the job. The legislation would also provide benefits to dependents in cases of work-related injuries or fatal diseases.
