To the Editor: Is it surprising that several of Donald Trump's impeachment defense lawyers have decided not to represent him? No, not at all. Reportedly Trump wants his lawyers to claim the "stolen election" as part of his defense of inciting a violent riot ("incitement of insurrection") in the Capitol.
Every attorney knows that there are at least two insurmountable problems with bringing the legitimacy of the presidential election into the impeachment trial. First, that is not a defense against the charge of incitement of a violent insurrection and the invasion of the Capitol.
