For nearly a decade, New York City’s Department of Sanitation has been working on overhauling the regulations governing how dozens of private sanitation companies collect the three million tons of garbage spawned by commercial businesses across the city each year.
The department is in the process of creating what it calls commercial waste zones, set to be introduced sometime next year, that will divide the city’s private garbage collection into 20 distinct areas, each designated to three private carters. By doing so, the city hopes to shorten collection routes, protect both sanitation workers and residents and reduce pollution.
