With no end in sight as the Federal Government shutdown nears its one-month anniversary, finances are getting increasingly dire for the hundreds of thousands of workers who are not getting paid but still must report to work because they have been deemed essential.
Close to 500,000 of the 800,000 furloughed Federal workers employed by agencies like the Transportation Safety Administration, the Bureau of Prisons, and the Internal Revenue Service find themselves having to report for duty or risk penalties for failure to show up including termination, even though paychecks remain on hold.
