Labor, Dems rip Hochul chief judge pick

But court officers’ unions back LaSalle

The leaders of powerful unions, a slew of state senators and progressive justice advocates have united in opposition to Governor Kathy Hochul’s choice for chief judge, Justice Hector LaSalle, calling him anti labor and unfit for the post. 

Fourteen Democratic state senators and numerous unions have come out against the Brooklyn Appeals Court jurist, arguing that his past decisions betray both anti-union and anti-abortion sentiments and that he will maintain the trend of an overly conservative court. Hochul made support for abortion access a central aspect of her successful campaign after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade decision and also received steadfast support from labor in her bid for a full term.
