Mayor's Juneteenth Swoon

A year ago, Mayor de Blasio pledged that he would make June 19, the day many African-Americans nationwide celebrate "Juneteenth" because it was the date in 1865 when blacks in Texas learned, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, that President Abraham Lincoln had declared them to be free, a city holiday.

Since then, Governor Cuomo made Juneteenth a holiday for state workers, and President Biden did the same for Federal employees June 17.
