Medicare dilemma

Posted

To the editor:

The city’s deputy commissioner of Labor Relations, Claire Levitt, told the City Council in January that the AETNA Retiree Plan is superior to municipal retirees current plan. And the chairman of the Municipal Labor Committee, Harry Nespoli, said that it's equal to the best plan that you could get together with Medicare. The United Federation of Teachers’ Michael Mulgrew mentioned that Aetna is designed to provide high-quality healthcare.

The Aetna agreement got the MLC’s OK through a weighted vote carried  primarily by DC37 and the UFT.  Reportedly on March 9th, 13 unions voted YES, 17 unions voted NO, 10 unions abstained, and 13 unions were no-shows.

Already we know that several hospitals won’t accept the Aetna plan. Obviously the Aetna plan can not compare with traditional Medicare, which is widely accepted. Many active and retired NYC unionists are phoning hospitals and physicians to seek answers that the Office of Labor Relations and the MLC have not provided. The Aetna Medicare Advantage PPO plan roll-out has more questions than answers.
