Mr. Trump goes on trial

Posted

To the editor:

So the mouth that roared wants to be silent as he faces the frightening specter of E. Jean Carroll who is suing him in federal court for sexual battery and defamation. Trump’s big mistake was calling Carroll a liar, especially after he left the White House where as president he might have had a legal loophole to dodge the defamation charge. As "Mr. Trump" he has no legal power to avoid the charge and face his accuser. It took her five years, but Ms. Carroll will finally get her day in court.

Trump has asked the U.S. District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan to excuse him from testifying, but the judge denied that request, and if Trump doesn’t testify the jury will have the right to hold that against him when they consider the evidence.

Even though Trump has little chance of winning over any jurors if he doesn’t testify, he probably will not testify, and E. Jean Carroll will be the first of a number of plaintiffs to beat him like a drum. What juror, after seeing the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape, would doubt that Trump is capable, or even likely, to be guilty of sexual battery on a woman?

Is this the beginning of the downward spiral for Trump, both politically and financially?
