Looking at State Attorney General Letitia James's recommendations on how to cure what ails the NYPD, the impression was that she had been sequestered from events that took place in both city and state government over the previous month.
The most-concrete change her panel proposed was that rather than having the Mayor choose the Police Commissioner, the selection should be made by a commission that would include representatives of the Mayor, the City Council, the Public Advocate and the City Comptroller. Similar systems exist in Detroit, San Francisco. In Los Angeles, a commission appoints the Police Chief, who must report back to it while exerting full control over the force.
