Mullins Gets Excuse to Think

When the NYPD lodged departmental charges against Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins for abuse of authority, we got a call from State Sen. Diane Savino saying it represented a serious threat to union officials' ability to speak out on behalf of their members, and that the rest of the city labor movement should be objecting.

Ms. Savino, a former vice president of Social Services Employees Local 371 of District Council 37, mentioned that more than 20 years earlier, during a union rally over outrageous behavior by then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani, she had marched wearing a t-shirt coupling his last name with an obscene suggestion. She wondered whether such expression could become a  target for a future Mayor who shared that one's disdain for the First Amendment.
