As the city deals with a second wave of coronavirus and the number of hospitalizations, nurses at two municipal hospitals say that they are prepared.
During the spring, NYC Health + Hospitals, particularly Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, became the epicenter of the pandemic as COVID cases exploded in the city. The 11 hospitals H+H oversees predominantly serve low-income, black and brown and immigrant communities that were disproportionately affected by the crisis. In April, daily hospitalizations reached 12,000, and staff faced severe shortages of personal protective equipment.
