Attorneys, paralegals, support staff and other employees at the New York Legal Assistance Group frustrated with what they say are heavy workloads, increasing health-care costs and stagnant wages walked out of their offices for two days this week. The wall-to-wall union has been negotiating for a new contract since last June and workers are frustrated with the lack of progress.
"Management has not offered raises that are sufficient for our membership to keep pace with the rising cost of living,” said Oren Silverman, an attorney in NYLAG’s tenant rights unit, its largest department. Silverman, among those who walked a picket outside of NYLAG’s Financial District office, said that management has been pushing to give the attorneys 1.75 percent yearly raises, and is trying to increase the contribution that individual workers make to their health-care plans.
