Mayor de Blasio’s decision to civilianize 415 positions within the NYPD last week marked a victory for District Council 37, which fought for decades to remove uniformed officers from desk duty and replace them with Police Administrative Aides.
Last week, Mr. de Blasio called the level of civilianization “absolutely historic” and a City Hall spokeswoman said the redeployment will save $7 million beginning in the 2017 fiscal year.
