To the editor,

I agree that men do not have the right to control women's lives (“Bravo Ohio,” letters, The Chief, Nov. 17). I feel legal vs. illegal abortion is the lesser of the two evils. But I disagree with the celebratory tone of the author's letter.

No matter how you think about it, abortion is the murder of a living being. Nothing to celebrate. A friend of a friend once told me she had five abortions. One or two is an issue with birth control. Five indicates being too lazy to use birth control or not wanting to exercise the slightest control over one's impulses.

I do not agree with pro-life lunatics that murder abortion doctors, bomb abortion clinics or harass those attempting to abort their fetuses. But I do believe abortion should be used only in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life in danger. Not as a form of birth control. I also think Mr. Gorman should read stories about women that have had abortions and felt terribly depressed after or regretted the decision.

    @Nat Weiner

    I respect your opinion on abortion so I can only advise you not to have one. How ever a woman decides to exercise her right to a particular medical procedure is her business alone and perhaps YOU should read stories about women that have had abortions and felt tremendous relief at not having to raise a child before they were ready (financially, mentally or emotionally) or had to carry the child of a rapist or an incestuous relative and never regretted the decision.

    This isn't the first time Mr. Weiner has presented an extreme view as though it were moderate or reasonable. He has no right whatsoever to set the circumstances under which a woman should be able to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.

    Anyone who forces their morality upon others, such as proclaiming "no matter how you think about it, abortion is the murder of a living being", is no different from the extremists who tell women what they must or must not wear or what jobs they should hold. For the majority of Americans "a living being" only exists at viability outside the womb or around 26 weeks. That was U.S. law for over 50 years until religious zealots forced their world view upon the rest of us. ******** is a private and personal decision between a woman, her doctor and her conscience, period!
