Paying a Price

It wasn't just a case of law-enforcement anger costing Democrats throughout New York State four State Senate seats, a few in the Assembly and two or three congressional seats, if the preliminary election results stand after all the absentee ballots are counted.

At least a couple of those races are tight enough that, judging by the way mail ballots in other parts of the nation skewed heavily Democratic, the incumbents may ultimately prevail once all the votes are tallied. But given the disappointments for the party in down-ballot races starting with the U.S. Senate, in an election where it hoped to make major gains rather than remaining the minority, the results should be cause for sober reassessment.
