To the editor:

I can’t believe the debt ceiling deal survived in the House and the Senate and was signed by President Joe Biden! Unbelievable! I would never be a successful gambler. The corrupt right-wing extremists and the naive left-wing extremists did not get what they wanted, but most decided the harm caused by going over the financial cliff was just not worth it. Now the compromise package that neither Democrats nor Republicans like is law. The American people won this battle.

In saving the U.S. economy and avoiding default, Congress gave Joe Biden a big edge over Trump and any other would-be Trumpers in the presidential election next year. I thought for sure the Republicans would torpedo the debt ceiling package to hurt Biden, his legacy and his chances for a second term. But Biden did what many successful leaders have done throughout American history. He knew how to persuade, and knew when to compromise, to get the opposite sides of an angry culture war to come to terms that fully pleased no one. This deal held the nation together and limited the harm to the poor and disadvantaged.

Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy were able to bring their respective sides together, and both deserve credit for saving our economy and preserving our nation as the leader of the free world.
