Retirees file suit to stop Medicare switch

A group of retired municipal workers filed a class-action suit Wednesday to halt the city from imposing a single cost-free health care plan on retirees that they have long claimed is vastly inferior to coverage currently available to them. 

The suit, which was expected, argues that city officials are prohibited from “diminishing” retirees’ health benefits. It also asserts that the city “is legally obliged” to cover costs of so-called Medigap supplemental insurance. “This obligation exists in statute and as a result of clear and unambiguous promises” made to the retirees on repeated occasions, it says.
