New Yorkers' right to paid and unpaid leave will be expanded after the City Council last week voted to pass a bill broadening the Earned Safe and Sick Time Act. The bill expands the conditions under which workers can use safe or sick leave and provides an additional 32 hours of unpaid leave.
The legislation, Intro 780, sponsored by Council Member Sandy Nurse, will allow 3 million workers in the city’s private sector to use their paid leave to attend housing or public benefits hearings, act as a caregiver or support their child’s education.
