Mayor de Blasio, who erred on the side of extreme caution in closing schools last month when they did not seem to be a significant factor in spreading the coronavirus, may be on the verge of being too slow to act as the virus picks up steam.
His Senior Adviser for Public Health, Jay Varma, told reporters Dec. 15 that the "tremendous health and social benefits" of in-person education justified keeping them open even if Governor Cuomo issued a pause order similar to his action March 20. The Mayor contended "this gold standard of health protections that we've put in place can effectively keep serving kids."
