School agents still essential

It's a positive sign that Mayor Adams is reconsidering his preliminary budget plan to cut 560 School Safety Agent positions in the wake of weapons seizures having risen 80 percent in the first eight months of the fiscal year compared to the 2019-2020 school year.

It was a puzzling decision when he announced it, and figures that have since surfaced make it even more baffling. Fourteen guns have been seized in the first six months of the school year, compared to just one in 2019-2020. There has been a 25-percent jump in knife seizures, and nearly seven times as many Tasers have been confiscated.
