Uber and Lyft drivers awarded $328 million settlement

AG’s agreement with rideshare companies preserves independent contractor status for now

About 100,000 current and former Uber and Lyft drivers will share in a $328 million settlement from the rideshare companies following findings by the state attorney general’s office that the ride-hailing platforms fleeced the drivers out of income.

The AG’s investigation, instigated in 2020 after a complaint by the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, determined that the rideshare companies unjustifiably deducted sales taxes and surcharges from drivers’ earnings that should instead have been paid by passengers.
