The United Federation of Teachers is calling for schools to be reopened in neighborhoods that have low COVID positivity rates rather than on a citywide basis—and for mayoral control of schools to be overhauled.
The union successfully pushed for individual schools in neighborhoods with an uptick in coronavirus cases to be closed rather than shutting down the entire school system, which had previously been the Mayor’s plan. Now, it wants the Mayor to take that same “regional approach” to reopening schools.
