UFT sues city over school budget cuts

Claims cuts are illegal and unnecessary

The United Federation of Teachers filed a lawsuit against the Adams administration Thursday over nearly $2 billion in planned budget cuts to the city public school system, which the union called “draconian and unnecessary.”

The administration plans to slash $547 million in funding at the city Department of Education for Fiscal Year 2024 as part of the Program to Eliminate the Gap included in the November budget plan. With two more 5-percent spending cuts expected in January and April, budget reductions to the school system are projected to reach nearly $2 billion this fiscal year and next.
