There were dozens of union members in the crowd of several thousand New Yorkers that gathered last Friday on the steps of the Main Branch of the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue to call for an immediate cease-fire in the latest war between Israel and the militant Palestinian group Hamas.
The conflict, the latest of a series of violent clashes since Israel established a full blockade of Gaza in 2005, has gripped the attention of people worldwide and has inspired hundreds of thousands of people to join rallies and marches in Europe, the Middle East and the United States calling for peace. Over the last 10 days, unions in the United States have weighed in on the war, with both the AFL-CIO and Service Employees International Union putting out statements condemning Hamas’ incursion into Israel while expressing concern with the “emerging humanitarian crisis” in Gaza.
