Tony Utano, who had just graduated high school when he began his NYC Transit career as an electrical helper and started ascending through the ranks at Transport Workers Union of America Local 100 shortly after that, has stepped away from the union’s presidency, just a year after winning a second term.
Utano, 60, who will continue as the union’s executive director, told the local’s board that he wanted to spend more time with his family.
