There was a sense of disbelief in the voice of a veteran TV reporter when he asked Mayor de Blasio during his daily briefing July 16 why he had yet to say anything about the vicious attacks by a woman wielding a cane against several police officers the previous morning, doing enough damage that one of them needed nine staples to close a gash to his head.
The Mayor had been silent on the subject the previous afternoon when he signed into law a package of bills approved by the City Council, most notably one that would criminalize actions by cops trying to get suspects under control that compressed their diaphragms. Some Council Members had expressed misgivings after passing that measure; Mr. de Blasio said then, "I know many in the Police Department, including many I truly respect, are concerned" about how this might inhibit officers.
