Wrongful death

To the editor:

City Comptroller Brad Lander settled a lawsuit with the family of Kevin Andrew Bryant, who, on Sept. 14, 2022, hung himself at Rikers Island. His family will receive $2.25 million.

Why was Bryant arrested? He entered an abandoned building to get out of the rain and was charged with trespassing. He was held on $5,003 bail.

Would it be asking too much for jail space to be reserved for those who assault people on the subway, who assault people because they are Jewish or Muslim, who rob people at gunpoint or for numerous other dangerous thugs? I don't think we need to be protected from people who forget to take a raincoat or umbrella before they leave home.
