'With spite and relish'

My friend's parents' German citizenship, like that of all Jews, was stolen by the Nazis through their "Nuremberg Laws.” Being stripped of nationhood was an early step towards total dehumanization. Although my friend had no interest in setting foot in the cradle of the holocaust, he resolved to parlay the bitter lessons of his parents' experiences into a project of self-discovery. 

 With spite and relish, he reclaimed his right to German citizenship by proving to the satisfaction of the demanding German consulate, that his parents were legitimately imperiled by persecution, and didn't just flee the Berlin cabarets to sample the fare in Vegas.
