Thousands of New York City police officers will soon be able to count prior service in other city law enforcement and public safety positions toward their pensions under a measure included in the newly passed state budget, which supporters say will strengthen recruitment while honoring the legacy of fallen officer Didarul Islam.
The legislation, known as the “Didarul Islam Police Recruitment Act,” grants Tier 3 members of the New York City Police Pension Fund credit for prior service as school safety agents, correction officers, traffic enforcement agents and NYPD cadets, if that service immediately preceded joining the NYPD.
