City legal services threatened by possible strike

Attorneys, support staff voting on work stoppage this week

With just days to go before contracts covering almost 2,500 attorneys, legal advocates and support staff expire, the threat of a strike that would shut down significant segments of the city’s legal system is fast approaching.  

Workers across a dozen United Auto Workers’ bargaining units have spent years quietly working to align their contract expiration dates to June 30, hoping the union could exert maximum pressure on both management and the lawmakers who fund legal services in New York City. As the weather warms and the days until the expiration date tick down, the City Council and Mayor Eric Adams are negotiating a budget for Fiscal Year 2026 that could include massive new investments that help union members get the contract provisions they’re demanding.
