As the sun set Friday and a bitter cold settled over the city, nearly 2,000 mourners gathered outside the Veterans Association NY Harbor Healthcare Center to honor Alex Pretti, a nurse whose colleagues say embodied the defining principle of their profession: compassion.
Pretti, an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, was killed last Saturday by a Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis. His death has reverberated through nursing unions and labor organizations nationwide, where fellow caregivers say the values at the heart of health care work – care, solidarity and service – are increasingly under threat.
