About 400 legal service workers walked out on strike Tuesday following the expiration of union contracts at four different legal service providers in New York City. More than 1,100 workers at the Legal Aid Society and three other legal service organizations could join their union siblings on the picket line as soon as Friday.
All are represented by the Association of Legal Advocates and Attorneys, Local 2325 of the United Auto Workers, which has slowly aligned the contracts of a dozen different bargaining units to expire over the last few weeks. Workers are now making good on their threat to strike if their contract demands for raises, limits on work, retirement benefits and more aren’t met.
